Penehupifo Pohamba has been First Lady of Namibia since her husband President Hifikepunye Pohamba took office in March 2005.Penehupifo was born in Okatale in Ohangwena Region,in the Consituency of Oshikango closer to the borders of Angola, She attended her primary and secondary school at Odimbo with Jeremiah Nambinga and Joel Kaapanda (both Namibian politicians), She was a school teacher at St George in Windhoek,
Penny is a member of SWAPO but she is not heavily involved in Politics as she feels that she should not be involved in her husband 's career, Penny have no position in the party, but she do attend party function with his husband. In 1974 Penehupifo left Namibia via Angola and headed to Zambia, She was married to Malakias Shiluwa in 1971 and they have one son (Waldeheim).After a few months in Zambia , Penehupifo was sent to Tanzania for medical training , she have also receive military training and work in the camps were the refugees from Namibia were housed.She was then sent to Jamaica for a three years period to study midwife , her husband (Malakias) was killed in the land mine and by that time she have a daughter (Ndelitungapo) , She was sent back to Angola to practice her medical skills among her own people.
In August 1982 , She was sent to East Germany to study politics at a college designed for Namibian, In 1983 She returned to Angola and was re-married to Hifikepunye Pohamba and they have 3 children's (Tulongeni meaning "Lets work" , Kaupu which means "In this world you will not finish the bad people" , and Ndapandula was born shortly after independence which means "I am happy")
In her tenure as First Lady, she has advocated for the empowerment of women to enable them to make a meaningful contribution to the development of society and has fought for the eradication of violence and other forms of injustice against women. She has also been active in supporting maternal and child health-care,and also in the fight against HIV/AIDS. In July 2006, she was elected Vice-President for the Southern Africa Development Committee (SADC). Mrs. Pohamba was trained in midwifery both in Tanzania and Jamaica and practiced as a midwife and as a registered nurse up until she became First Lady.
